A useful neutral order

A neutral Portuguese statement often follows subject + verb + complement.

The complement may be an object, a description, a place or a time expression.

Word order can change for topic or emphasis, but this neutral pattern is the safest starting point.

Fórmula
  • sujeito + verbo + complemento
  • A Marta prepara o jantar.
  • Os miúdos brincam no jardim.

The subject is often omitted

Portuguese verb endings often identify the subject, so subject pronouns are frequently omitted.

Eu is useful for contrast or clarity: Eu trabalho aqui, mas ela trabalha em casa.

A gente is common, especially in Brazil, and always takes a third-person singular verb; the exercises use nós as the European Portuguese baseline.

Fórmula
  • (Eu) falo português.
  • (Nós) moramos em Lisboa.
  • A gente mora aqui.

Articles and agreement

Nouns normally appear with a definite or indefinite article when the context calls for one.

Articles and adjectives agree with the noun in gender and number.

Descriptive adjectives usually follow the noun in a neutral phrase.

Fórmula
  • um livro novo
  • uma casa branca
  • os livros novos
  • as casas brancas

Ser, estar, ter and há

Ser introduces identity or a defining characteristic; estar commonly describes a state or location.

Ter expresses possession and appears in everyday expressions such as ter vinte anos.

Há introduces existence in both singular and plural contexts: Há um café; Há dois cafés. Detailed contrasts belong to the later verb phase.

Fórmula
  • Sou estudante.
  • Estou cansada.
  • Tenho vinte anos.
  • Há uma farmácia aqui.

Negatives, questions and short pronouns

Put não before the verb to form a basic negative.

Yes/no questions usually keep statement order; intonation and the question mark do the work.

At recognition level, notice the European pattern Vejo-o, but Não o vejo after a negative word.

Fórmula
  • Trabalho aqui.
  • Não trabalho aqui.
  • Trabalhas aqui?
  • Vejo-o. / Não o vejo.
